Netflix: What’s New on Streaming (August 2014)

netflix-logo

For these Netflix posts I’ve been doing over the past few months, I’ve only been sharing new titles that come on U.S. Netflix (and only a few of them, at that). I’m totally aware that there are different titles for different countries, but I wanted to give it time to see what countries most of my blog views are coming from. After seeing that the #2 and #3 most frequent visitors to my blog are from Canada and the UK, I feel like it’s time to expand this. So below I’ve made separate lists of new titles for August for U.S., Canada, and UK Netflix, and I’ll be doing the same for the “Expiring Soon” posts as well (or try to, anyway). I’ll also, as usual, be recommending a few titles I’ve seen (for U.S. Netflix). Oh, and fun fact–if you use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service for your internet, connecting through other countries’ IPs is an awesome way to enjoy titles on Netflix that aren’t available in your home country.

The following titles are available on U.S. Netflix streaming as of August 1st.

FaceOff_(1997_film)_poster

Face/Off (1997)

Director: John Woo
Cast: John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Joan Allen
Genre: Action

FBI Agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) undergoes a face transplant surgery to assume the identity of terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), which backfires on him when Castor takes Sean’s face and impersonates him in return. This movie is ludicrous but extremely entertaining. Travolta and Cage both have to play two of the same characters in this movie. When it comes time for them to switch personalities, it’s believable and it stays consistent within both of their performances. First Cage is the bad guy, then he’s the good guy, and vice versa. It has some great action, and it’s just an entertaining movie all around.

madmaxMad Max (1979)

Director: George Miller
Cast: Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne
Genre: Action

In a dystopian Australia, a policeman named Max (Mel Gibson) is out to get revenge on a motorcycle gang who is responsible for the death of his partner and his family. For anyone who is planning on seeing Mad Max: Fury Road with Tom Hardy next year, you should definitely check this one out first. A 23-year-old Mel Gibson is a total badass in this movie, going after some of the strangest looking, intimidating biker gang members that are terrorizing Australia. It takes place in the future, but you couldn’t really tell as the sets aren’t exactly what most people would consider “futuristic” in the generic sense of the word. However, this isn’t really a problem, as the sci-fi aspect of it isn’t important. It’s basically a simple story of a guy standing up to a bunch of savages. This movie was made on a low budget and still managed to be successful, costing under $1 million to make, and grossing over $100 million worldwide.

220px-Rocky_posterRocky I-V (1976-90)

Director: John G. Avildsen
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers
Genre: Sports Drama

They were gone from Netflix for a month, and now they’re back. For anyone who hasn’t yet had the chance to see Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) fighting Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in multiple inspiring tales of victory and defeat, you can see them all on Netflix. The first one, in my opinion, is the best (although everyone may not agree), and even if you don’t feel like watching them all, I would suggest that you at least watch the first one from 1976. It was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 3–Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. These are probably Sylvester Stallone’s best movies, although some people might argue for Rambo (or others), and that’s okay.

RoundersPosterRounders (1998)

Director: John Dahl
Cast: Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Gretchen Mol, John Malkovich, John Turturro
Genre: Drama

After Worm (Edward Norton) finds himself in a gambling hole of debt, Mike (Matt Damon), a reformed gambler decides to return to playing high stakes poker in order to pay off his friend’s debt. The things that make this movie so good are the actors’ performances and the script. The plot is pretty simple and straight forward and you’re dealing with your typical poker movie for the most part. Is the main character going to win or lose? However, the characters happen to be very well written and, of course, you have Edward Norton doing what (in my opinion) he does best, playing the despicable character. He is the enabler for the recovering gambler and the cause of all the problems. It’s an engaging film and the actors are on at the top of their game. It’s well worth the watch.

220px-Shooter2007PosterShooter (2007)

Director: Antoine Fuqua
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Michael Peña, Rhona Mitra, Kate Mara, Danny Glover, Elias Koteas
Genre: Action/Drama

Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg), a marksman and U.S. Marine, witnesses his friend’s death during a military operation in Africa. After living in exile, he is convinced by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) to help them stop a plot to assassinate the President. However, he is double-crossed and ends up framed for the attempt. I don’t think I could ever really explain my reasoning for loving Marky Mark as much as I do, especially since he used to be kind of a violent psychopath in his earlier years, but let’s just pretend like that isn’t true for a second. I think he’s great in most movies, and this one is no exception. Although, he’s not the only reason to watch it. I think the first time I saw this movie I had put it on at about 3am, I thought I’d watch 20 minutes and go to sleep. Nope, stayed up until 5am instead because I couldn’t turn it off. It’s suspenseful, exciting, and even though parts of the plot seem highly illogical, it’s still a really entertaining movie.

About Justine B.

I'm a 25-year-old who grew up watching all kinds of movies and have always been passionate about them. I am a college grad who studied films, filmmaking, and writing, so why not put those skills to good use and write about movies? My goal is to see as many movies as I can and share them with fellow movie lovers. I've created this blog in order to do just that. I want to write about movies, new and old, and share updates on things I'm excited about.
